About the client

The client under discussion is one of the leading furniture stores providing goods for the office infrastructure. Having a blue-collar client base, they wished to raise the standards and expand their coverage to bring more business. Initially, they were using the Magento 1 for the workings, but it was bringing occasional errors that were hampering the jobs. The Challenges

While migrating all the data from Magento 1 to Magento 2, we certainly had to face some challenges. But those challenges didn’t stop us instead of motivated us to work harder and enhance our skills. The biggest problems which stood in front of us were:

While moving the store database, we had to ensure the proper migration of many things. These included moving websites and stores, moving tax data, initiating basic SEO setup, moving customer base and its structure, migrating product data, and many more.

Due to the difference in the platforms, the third-party extensions working on Magento 1 would not be working on Magento 2. Hence, we had to redesign all the functionality and look for the best alternatives on the latter version of Magento.

Since the themes are non-transferrable, we had to look for alternatives that were equally compelling and gave the user the thematic feel. Hence, there was a lot of work to do in that regard.

First of all, Magento 2 was installed on the client’s server. After that, we installed and configured the Magento Data Migration Tool. The tool is primarily designed to transfer the data from the former version of Magento to the latter one. So, we configured the connections with the tool and set them up for the defined source and the destination connections. Then, we migrated all the settings, products and categories, customers, orders, and CMS data. Along with that, we also migrated media files and ACLs.

There were in total seven third party extensions installed on the client’s server. These were:

  • German Store Module by Symmetrics
  • Data Feed Manager by Wyoming
  • Search Suit, Advanced Product Option and SEO Suite Ultimate by Mageworx
  • Order module export and tracking number import by Xtento.

The biggest problem we suffered here was that most of the modules were not available on Magento 2. Hence, we had to pull the reins of the minds to find the best alternatives for these plug-ins. After rigorous thoughts, we found the excellent substitutes for the extensions.

The client wished to go for buying a ready-to-use theme by Pronto. To let the client test the theme up to his satisfaction, we updated the theme in a dev site that had no content and was kept just for the testing. After rigorous testing, the theme was finalized and put to the client’s website.

Push to the business

The shift from the initial version to the latest version of Magento brought around a great advantage to the business of the client. Not only did it improve the site and its appearance, but there also came a significant influence on the workings of the site and lead conversion.
